The Snow Maiden is a winter folktale from Russia.
A couple who live high in the northern forest are filled with sadness at never having had children. With a magical spell Father Frost brings their snow sculpture to life with a forest spirit who appears as a beautiful loving child.
All is well until she spots a loving couple playing in the woods and begins to imagine what true love must feel like. In the search for love she meets a shepherd boy but can a boy and a forest spirit fall in love and what will happen if she doesn't listen to the warnings of Father Frost and Mother Spring.
After listening to the story consider the following questions:
This story is set in the northern forests of Russia, this forest is called the Taiga and stretches for 3200 miles. Had you ever heard of this Forest? See what else you can discover about this Forest, is it the largest in the world?
Typically people build 'Snowmen' but in this story the woodcutter and his wife build a snow lady- next time it snows wrap up warm and build a snow lady of your own.
The story has a different ending to typical fairytales, how did you feel at the end? If you could re-write the ending what would happen?
