This story is an old Scandinavian Folk Tale.
It is July in the northern lands and things are not as they should be. Spring hasn't returned and rumours tell of her being taken prisoner by Old Man Winter.
A young boy goes on a quest to save his people by setting spring free but on his journey he encounters a transformation that he cold have never imagined. Will he be successful or will the world be locked in an unbreakable winter?
After listening to this story consider the following questions:
1). The changing seasons always bring joy to us, we like the periods of change rather than one particular season, do you have a favourite time of year?
2). In the story Oscar is transformed into a tiger, if you could change into any animal what would it be and why?
3). In lots of nature stories Winter is often depicted as a man and Spring as a woman, can you think of any reasons why?
Thank you I am writing from the land of the Arapahoe Cheyenne and Ute people of Turtle Island - so called Denver Colorado… We are in a short grass prairie and we have four seasons… We also are experiencing drought as a result of climate change… In the spirit of folktales and story telling I an consideration adaptive this to represent the character of Summer holding hostage Old man winter that brings us our water supply… I love the images of digging and banding together and waking up and that being enough to make a change together!
