This is English folk tale is from the book Earth Tales from around the world by Michael Caduto
In this fun story all the birds are just beginning to learn how to be in the world when Magpie begins building a strange structure called a 'nest'. All the other birds are fascinated by this and gather around to learn how it's done, however some birds are more patient than others and a whole array of nests are built throughout the lands.
After listening to this story consider the following questions
Throughout the story all the birds are busy making nests, which nest do you think is the most effective for raising young chicks, consider things such as predators, keeping warm and size of clutch (number of eggs).
In the story the birds gather and watch Magpie build it's nest. It's a great reminder that by observing each other we can lear, can you remember the last tie you learnt something new by watching somebody else?
At the end the Magpie becomes angry with the Turtle Dove. During the interaction the Magpie could have chosen kindness over anger and helped the Turtle Dove- can you remember a time when this may have happened to you? Is it easy or hard to be kind when somebody asks for help?
I am so happy that I found your website!! You are wonderful. I am going to be sharing these stories and ideas with children in Maine! Such thanks!
Lovely video and great storytelling (clear, lively and engaging) of a story all about birds and their nests. Thank you for sharing! Good questions too about the story to get children thinking about the story content and real-life context.
